How long should my gaskets last?
Gaskets are designed with a material that should last a very long time. However, due to the often harsh conditions found in a busy kitchen environment this is not always the case. The life expectancy of a gasket in your kitchen will be based on the following.
- The frequency and how each gasket is cleaned.
- How often the cooler door is opened and closed.
- The proximity of the gasket to extreme heat & cold.
- The quality and type of the gasket material.
- How careful employees are when removing items from the refrigerator.
What is the gasket's worst enemy?
Bleach, mold, long finger nails, sloppy cleaning habits, metals pans, and the careless removal of food, are all great ways to kill the gasket early.
What's the best way to maintain the condition of the gasket?
Clean your gaskets regularly with a product that is specifically designed to do so. We suggest specifically including the gasket as part of your routine cleaning regiment, and using a product like "Gasket Wipes" to get the job done right.
Why does my gasket get black toxic mold?
Black toxic mold has a habit of growing and embedding itself in the gasket when its surface is wet for at least a week. Make sure to keep the gasket dry at all times. It's not enough to simply clean the gasket with hot soapy water! Use Gasket Wipes to clean away the debris and nourish the surface of the gasket. Do this regularly to maintain the natural condition of the gasket.

Is Toxic Black Mold a big deal?
Toxic black mold or black mold is a name commonly used for Stachybotrys chartarum. It is one of the most infamous toxic molds. It can easily grow on refrigerator gaskets and is extremely dangerous to humans. Stachybotrys is known as a toxic mold because it produces toxins called mycotoxins. If you ever see this type of mold on your gasket replace it immediately, and ask one of our experienced staff to advise how to prevent this from happening in the future.
Why does my gasket tear along the top?
Seeing the gasket torn along the top edge is frustrating because the rest of the gasket still looks good, right? There are a couple of reasons why this can happen.
- Cleaning with harsh chemicals and bleach can eat through the surface of the gasket, causing it to tear prematurely. Also, allowing harsh chemicals to pool inside the folds of the gasket will soften the surface of the gasket material and reduce its life expectancy greatly.
- Repeatedly grabbing the gasket with your fingers or long finger nails when opening the cooler door. This is a sure fire way to tear the gasket at the top and is the cause of most premature gasket tears in this location. We strongly recommend using the door handle to always open the door.
- Excessive cleaning. We've whitnessed folks using abrasive brillo pads, platic scrubbing brushes, and wire wool to the clean the gaskets. Can I please ask you to STOP the insanity if this is you. We firmly reccommend Gasket Wipes for all of your gasket cleaning needs.
When should I switch out for a new Gasket?
The gasket should be replaced when any of the following four conditions are present.
- When the gasket is compromising the condition of the food.
- When the refrigerator or freezer is overworking.
- If the gasket does not meet the standards set forth by the Health Inspector.
- When standards in your workplace warrant a new gasket.
